Beyond Medias Res, Delaney is a founding creative force behind Splathouse Productions, collaborating on independent films, shorts, live events, and other genre-bending projects built around a fiercely DIY approach to filmmaking.

His work also extends into audio and podcasting. He has created and hosted shows including The SPLATHOUSE Podcast, THESOVPOD, and A Minor Problem, exploring cult and outsider cinema, pop culture, storytelling, and filmmaking.

Across film, performance, writing, and audio, Delaney gravitates toward stories that are funny, uncomfortable, surreal, and deeply human—work made independently, collaboratively, and with little interest in behaving itself.

In Medias Res, Coykendall stars as Summer Hayes, the enigmatic stranger whose arrival sends the film spiraling into its strange nocturnal world. She also worked behind the camera as a producer on the feature.

Coykendall is a founding member of Oakland’s Splathouse Productions, where she serves as Co-Executive Producer and Co-Artistic Director, helping shape the company’s distinctive collision of film, theater, horror, comedy, and underground culture.

She is also the lead singer and front person of Bay Area punk rock band The Creepy Crawlies, bringing the same theatricality and restless creative energy of her film work to the stage.

Whether in front of a camera, behind the scenes, or at the microphone, Coykendall’s work is rooted in a fiercely independent, DIY approach to making art—an ethos that runs straight through Medias Res.

In Medias Res, Mason stars as Joe, Dave Meeks’ roommate and reluctant companion as a desperate plan for quick money sends the pair deeper into the strange corners of the Bay Area. His understated performance gives the film a grounded center even as the world around Joe becomes increasingly unstable.

Mason has continued working within the orbit of Splathouse Productions and alongside filmmakers Edwin F. Gonzalez and Delaney, contributing to a shared tradition of fiercely independent, low-budget filmmaking where limitation and experimentation become part of the aesthetic.

Mason makes his writing and directing debut with the surreal short The Deer Is the Protagonist. Set against the isolation of rural Oregon, the darkly comic film follows a man recovering from a traumatic brain injury after a bizarre encounter with a series of deer, only to find himself visited by three increasingly inexplicable strangers. Dream logic, musical absurdity, deadpan comedy, and existential dread gradually collapse into one another.

Whether performing inside someone else’s strange universe or constructing one of his own, Mason brings a naturalistic and distinctly eccentric sensibility to independent filmmaking—one increasingly informed by the isolation, beauty, and strangeness of the rural Pacific Northwest.

Gonzalez directed, co-wrote, produced, shot, and edited Medias Res, a microbudget Bay Area feature created through resourcefulness, collaboration, and an embrace of the limitations of truly independent filmmaking. Blending neo-noir, dark comedy, crime, and surrealism, the film follows two friends whose pursuit of quick money pulls them through an increasingly fractured vision of the Bay Area.

Originally rooted in the Bay Area independent film community, Gonzalez now splits his time between Atlanta, Georgia, and San Juan, Puerto Rico, expanding the geographic and cultural landscape surrounding his work.

His longtime collaboration with Delaney extends across film, writing, performance, and podcasting, with a shared fascination for cult, independent, and outsider cinema. His approach favors making ambitious work with the resources at hand and allowing the limitations of independent production to become part of the aesthetic.

Gonzalez is currently developing new independent work, including the forthcoming feature Hard Way Out, while Medias Res finds a new audience through its 4K re-release.

At the center of Gonzalez’s filmmaking is a fascination with people caught between desperation and possibility—stories that can be funny, dangerous, intimate, and deeply strange, often all at once.
